Geocache Description:

This earthcache visits a significant granite outcrop and water catchment in the Western Australian Wheatbelt.


A granite outcrop in WA’s wheatbelt. Beringbooding Rock has the largest rock water catchment tank in Australia. It was built in 1937 and when it was built held two and a quarter million gallons of water. “Sustenance Labour” was used to build the tank at a cost of 10,000 pounds. Beringbooding has an amazing balancing boulder, a huge gnamma hole and some of the Kalamaia Tribes paintings of hands in a cave at the rear of the rock.

Beringbooding Rock's value to the region as a water source is apparent from the car park, next to which is a massive water tank. The great expanse of the rock acts as the water catchment.  The low wall built around the perimeter of the rock catches the rainfall run-off and channels it across an aqueduct into the tank. A roof over the tank preserves the precious water from evaporation during the long dry spells.

Granite outcrops of Western Australia are inselbergs and monoliths made from granite and are found across much of Western Australia.  

An inselberg is an isolated rock hill, knob, ridge, or small mountain that rises abruptly from a gently sloping or virtually level surrounding plain.  A monolith is a geological feature consisting of a single massive stone or rock, such as some mountains, or a single large piece of rock placed as, or within, a monument or building. Monoliths just need to be “of a single stone”.

Erosion usually exposes the geological formations, which are often made of very hard and solid metamorphic or igneous rock.
