During the construction of the 56,000 acre lake know as Lake Hartwell, some family homesteads had to be gained by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers for the plan. The site you are standing at was once the Smith Family Homestead. The lived here farming the surrounding lands, raising their own hogs, honey and using the trees to build their cabin by hand.
