Geocache Description:

There is parking along the side of the road on Range Road 195. A nice walk through the bushes, near the pond.

This cache is placed by the Marl Pool near Marlboro. Marlboro was named for the Marl deposit and for the old english word "borough" which means  a town or a settlement.

Marl is the white that you see in this area. It is a white mineral that is found on the surface of the soil. You can see it across the pool. Geologists say it is being pushed to the surface by subterranean springs from very deep underground.

People came here when the Marlboro Cement Company was started around April 25th 1911. The Tall chimney you see in this area (west of here) is where the cement plant was. Three other large chimneys were taken down and this is the only one remaining. It is 185 feet tall and contains 22 carloads of steel rods. It was finished in 1912. Cement bags were loaded in rail cars and the cement was shipped across Western Canada. It is said that some of the cement from the plant was used to build the Legislature building in Edmonton and the first High Level bridge in Edmonton. The plant closed in 1932 after making cement for 20 years.

Charlie Franklin ran lumber camps, mills and planers for years around Marlboro. The first large truck was a Reo owned by Rosco Lovell in 1927. He hauled the first ties by truck for C. Franklin. He also drove the first vehicle, his truck, down the Coal Branch Road (Before there was a road) in 1939. This was the only truck in the Edson District in 1927 and was used to haul rails out of Hargwen by the Railroad.

The only way to get to Edson was by team or train until around 1924. Marlboro had a post office, stores, community center, and a school at one time. The Post Office had 6 Post Masters in 55 years. Bernice Lovell Sr. had it Sept 1943 to June 13,1973. Isabel Longmore had it from 1973-1975. It was closed in 1975.  Many descendants of the people who helped build this area still live in the area today.
