Geocache Description:

Not too long ago Waller Mill's reputation hinged around a small black and silver speckled fish called crappie. The population was so plentiful anyone using small minnows or small crappie jigs could fill a cooler with fish during the course of a day. However, large crappie (approximately in the 1 pound range) were starting to dwindle. A citation sized fish would be about 2 pounds. At Waller Mill, the average crappie was around 1/2 pound, meaning population growth was out of control.

Several times in the late 1970s, the parks and recreation staff pondered over what could be done to help stop the small fish from taking over the lake. A choice was made in 1980 to introduce one of the crappie's predators to the lake: the Striped Bass. Since its introduction, the landlocked stripers have become a significant draw of fisherman across the area. Additionally, larger crappie catches have resulted as well, making the reservoir a fisherman's gem.

The Waller Mill Park Bike Trail is a two mile multiuse asphalt path connecting Rochambeau Drive and Mooretown Road. Additional park information is available in the "Related Web Page" link. A big thank you to the City of Williamsburg for allowing us to geocache along this wonderfully maintained trail.
