FogPhish Barque
This is the first in a
series of 15 geocaches on a beautiful hike through sandy grasslands and the
beach.
Forest and
Ocean Geocaching while Power Hiking
Incredible Sleepy Hollow.
Well, a few feet west of
Sleepy Hollow! I started the series by identifying 16 locations along the
Sleepy Hollow Trail, then returned and placed the first eight. The Trail
is located east of the beach grasslands and west of a long, narrow marsh.
Due to the marsh, the mosquitoes along the trail are beyond belief. After
placing the caches there, I finally decided I could not in good conscience
expect anyone to search for them under those conditions! So, I moved them
out onto the grasslands along a very nice track/trail between the woodland and
the ocean. It's very different from the forest, but no less spectacular.
You may still encounter
a few mosquitoes along the edge of the forest, so be sure to bring repellent if
hiking in the warmer months. The lemon eucalyptus products work incredibly
well.
The hike begins near the
Peter Iredale shipwreck and goes to Delaura Beach Road, two miles south.
It's probably best to start near the Iredale since the lower part of Delaura
Beach Road is often under (a lot) of water, and not passable.
To start, park at the
Peter Iredale ("Shipwreck") parking area (free) and head south down the
easternmost of the two roads there. The trailhead is west of the curve in
the road and marked with a waypoint for this cache.
The caches, in order, are:

Several of the caches
are hanging in bushes or trees. When
replacing, please be sure the wire hanger is completely closed around the branch
to prevent falling off.
Enjoy the beautiful hike
and please let me know if anything needs attention. Or if I have
misidentified any trees or plants in the hints!
A
barque is a sailing ship with three or more masts.
