Geocache Description:

Brandon’s first power trail featuring all the Mayors of the City.

Caches should all prove to be a fairly quick find on what we thought was a beautiful drive.  Hopefully you learn a little along the way as well.

Joseph Henry Hughes (1857-1917)

Joseph was born on April 14, 1857 in London, Ontario.  He taught school in 1875 and went into business as a general merchant.  He moved to Brandon 1882 and formed a partnership with T.H. Patrick of Souris in a lumber business.  The operated lumber yards in Brandon and Souris.  Their business closed in 1886 and Joseph establishes mills in Ontario.  He closed those in 1901 and opened a retail lumber business in Brandon on 10th Street between Rosser and Princess.  He owned most of the property between 10th and 11th street on Rosser and Princess.  He built a brick block on 10th street as well as the Strathcona

Joseph served as Brandon city alderman for four years, chairman of the Board of Public Workds and Mayor of Brandon in 1914.

He passed in Brandon on August 5, 1917 after being ill.
