David K. "Dave" Burgess was born in 1959 in Brandon. He was raised in the city and earned his Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Manitoba. He operated a family meat packing business before entering politics. He was first elected to Brandon City Council in 1998 to represent the city's sixth ward. He was appointed to the board of the Keystone Centre and spearheaded a movement to upgrade the facility's services. Dave was mayor of Brandon from 2002 to 2010.
