Geocache Description:

To be able to place a cache with the train, huh? Got your scuba gear and a shovel? Cache is a park and grab at Railroad and Mill Streets. There used to be one of William Williams' mills here at ground zero. There was a spur line of a few hundred feet. Story goes, back around 1910 a train was either leaving or approaching the mill and it tipped over into the lake. It's called Grass Lake but it's also known as Mud Lake. According to Stephen Spencer and Ruth Freese, two people who grew up in Attica and had the privilage of swimming through the train, it's not far off the current railbed and a bit to the east. The two of them agreed there's the engine and a car behind it. Neither could agree what kind of engine it was. Mr. Spencer said decades after he swam through it a grandson tried to locate the train, by then the lake had turned to muck. He said he found the train, except it wasn't in any condition to be swam through again. Theory is besides it sinking, the amount of dead vegetation from the lake is building up on top of it, burying it even deeper. It's probably gone to history. Can't imagine the task of getting the train from the lake, it would be amazing though, and have it sitting in Attica Park? There's a huge gap in missing newspaper articles during the time frame the train took it's plunge, however I'm still looking for stories locals grew up hearing about the train. I don't care how much is fact or fiction at this point, it's just fun to hear what's been passed on. If you have a story about it, add it to your found it log.
