HISTORY: See also cache GC6JGPY as that spot ties into the history of this cache. The land south of the creek here at ground zero is the original location of Mattoon School, a shanty or log structure. Early on one room schools were built in haste to get the new settlement up and running. Over time a nicer frame structure is built, often in the same place. In the case of Mattoon, the permanent school was built northeast of here by the 1880's. It was established prior to 1863 and was one of the longest running one room schools in Attica Township. From the Attica Historical Book with additions: Mattoon was located on Hunters Creek Road near Winslow. The school housed students until the late 1940's. The county directory of 1950-51 listed the school as still being an official country school, but having no enrollment. The value of the school then was listed as $115,866. Mattoon School had it's ups and downs in population with 27 students in 1902 when Belle Russell was teacher, her salary was $195 for the year. In 1918, 43 students attended and in 1927 there were only 20. The school report listed the building as having three rooms in 1927. Students leaving the 8th grade to pursue further education in a high school district appeared to be few, as with other schools during this period. Students from this area had a choice to go to Attica, Imlay or Dryden. Students were not required to complete high school by law, as many were needed at home or on the farm to keep families thriving. Mattoon School was torn down in the mid-1950's.
