Welcome to Mount Carmel United Methodist Church and its beautiful Cemetery! I've driven past this wonderful property twice per day for almost 9 years and I figured, how lovely it would be to have a geocache here. With Memorial Day coming up, and my family full of veterans, it all made sense. Enjoy!
You are hunting an almost-ammo-can-size container in a nice part of the cemetery property that seems perfect for reflection about ours and others' fallen loved ones. Please return about how you found it; it's in a very open spot so please cover with some leaves or such so it doesn't get muggled.

Mount Carmel: A Brief History
Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church is one of the oldest churches in Gwinnett County. In the late 1700s a treaty was signed with the Creek and Cherokee Indians and the State of Georgia, establishing the Chattahoochee River as the State boundary. At that time, South Old Peachtree Road was an old military road that led from Fort Daniel near Hog Mountain to Fort Gilmer at what is now the Atlanta Water Works. There was also an Indian trail that intersected with the military road at the intersection of Medlock Bridge. The Indians had a trading post nearby and shortly after settlers came to this area, the Pinckneyville Inn, later called Hunnicutt Inn, was established. It served as a stagecoach inn, a trading post, and a post office; and the little village of Pinckneyville was born.
The church was established around 1826 and was a one-room log cabin with a drafty wood stove. The congregation sat on split log benches. The first minister was Reverend Billy Parks. He was a circuit rider minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Unfortunately there are no written records of Mt. Carmel before the civil war, but the Methodist Church does have records of the ministers who served this circuit.
There were no Civil War battles fought nearby as there were no factories. Union soldiers would come to the small farms looking for food, but they found that times were really hard for families after the Civil War. In 1870, changes came to the area when the Airline Railway (now Norfolk-Southern) was completed from Atlanta to Norcross.
Mt. Carmel built its second church in 1876. About 50 years later in 1925, members felt the need for a more comfortable, spacious and up to date church to hold services. Mr. John Mills of Atlanta volunteered to give $500 to a new church fund. Mr. T. E. Summerour volunteered to head up a committee to solicit funds.
The windows of the church are all memorials, and the large window in the front of the sanctuary was given by the Mills family. John Mills died while the new church was still being erected. Many of the windows feature masonic symbols, as Lodge membership was very important to the community. Two memorials were added later on, and many of the nearby streets bare the names of Mt. Carmel families. Bush Road, Simpson School, and Summerour School are all related to church members.
Most of the work was done by church members who were fine carpenters as well. The church built upward in the 60s, and in 1972 the first full-time pastor was appointed to Mt Carmel. In 1997, the new Fellowship Hall, kitchen, and downstairs Sunday School rooms, and Pre-School classrooms were added.
