Geocache Description:

This cache will take you on a short walk in Dunedin’s Southern Cemetery. The inscriptions on the grave stones and plaques will provide the answers to six easy questions that will reveal the hiding place of the geocache container.


The published coordinates are for the parking area inside the entrance off Main South Road. The gates are open as follows:

Winter hours, April to September are 8 am to 5.30 pm. Summer hours, October to March 7.30am to 7.30 pm

A: James Balfour S 45 53.340 E 170 29.621 Block 3p plot 75

James was a marine Engineer  and a cousin of Robert Louis Stevenson. He arrived in Otago in 1863 and was later drowned while landing at Timaru  where he went to attend the funeral of a colleague who had also been drowned. He died on  A8th Dec 1869.

 

B: Alexander Ranaldson  MacDonell S 45 53.359 E 170 29.571  Block 1P Plot 34.

This magnificent monument to this the 1Bth  Chief of Glengarry  replaces the original stone which had severely deteriorated over the years, fragments of which, are housed in Toitu Otago Settlers Museum. This monument has been donated by the Clan Donald Societies and Foundations in NZ and US.

 

C: John Cooper S 45 53.343 E 170 29.659  Block 107 plot 54

John was an old Whaler, and he lived to a remarkable age for the times He was a resident of the Benevolent Institution in Caversham at the time of his death on the 24th Feb 1875. He was aged 11C years of age.

 

D: Duncan Gordon Boyes S 45 53.323 E 170 29.631  Block 6p  plot 24

Duncan was born in 184D,(calculation required) he was one of the earliest and youngest holders of the Victoria Cross. He died at the tender age of 22 years and 2 months of age. He was once buried here with a stone at his head and feet, but in 1954 he was disinterred and reburied in the  servicemens section of the Andersons Bay Cemetery.

 

.E: John Jones S 45 53.340 e 170 29.579 Block 2P  plot VLT

   .Johnny Jones, as he was affectionately known by many was one of the original European settlers in Otago, having  acquired land from Maori at Waikouaiti. He died, on the 16th of  March 1869, aged 6E years of age.

 

F: Thomas Logan S 45 53.327 E 170 29.570  Block 12P Plot 114.

A recent memorial plaque has been added to this grave site of a prominent Gold Miner- he was never a Ships Captain, though. He came to Otago and initially worked on a claim at Big Beach in the Shotover before going to Bendigo and setting up the Cromwell Quartz Mining Company with Goodger and others. He was the leading figure in the Company he had established and was also involved in other companies which sprang up. He sold his shares in 1875 for 15.000 pounds, and ‘embarked on a career of opulence’ in Australia. He returned to Dunedin shortly before his death on 1F -8-1897.
