Geocache Description:

2016- A Herring Odyssey

This puzzle is in honor of sixteen years of Geocaching, the first cache placed by Dave Ulmer on May 3, 2000, and the first first-to-find by Mike Teague.

The cache used to be at the posted coords, but the only thing there now is an empty EVA pod.

In the year 2001, two Red Herrings, Dave & Mike, left aboard Discovery One on a secret mission to Jupiter on a real Space Odyssey. Since they were in cryogenic hibernation, It seemed like it only took them an instant to get there, but in reality, it took years. When they arrived in Jupiter's orbit, they made a startling discovery:
a featureless BLACK MONOLITH. In the next instant they were transported back to a patch of woods in Oregon on May 3, 2000, where they hid a first-of-its-kind secret for future geo-generations to find.

Still under the effect of the black monolith, they were transported into the future where they hid something else for you to find. Fast forward to today, where we now know that time & space are intertwined in a four-dimensional continuum. If you locate this cache, will you be transported back to the year 2000, 2001, or maybe into the future? Only time and HAL know for sure, and HAL's not talking. He learned his lesson- maybe! Has he REALLY been shut down? So you do need to be careful and remember, HAL can read lips! Oh, and watch out for the apes. They learned how to use weapons and they want to reclaim this cache.

Good luck and have fun with this one. AND by all means, don't talk about HAL or challenge any apes!
