Geocache Description:

Micro cache hidden on the edge of Widcombe parish on a section of the Bath Skyline walk.

Looking at Bath today, it can be difficult to appreciate the rich industrial and design heritage that the city has. Macauley Buildings, close to this cache location, were once home to George Carwardine.  Carwardine was a designer who specialised in car suspensions, but he is better known for his design of the anglepoise lamp which he patented in the 1930s.  Anglepoise lamps contain an adjustable folding arm which is constructed so that the force due to gravity is always counteracted by springs.  This enables the lamp to be placed in many positions without needing to be clamped.  Carwardine initially used his own company to produce the lamps, but demand was so high that he licensed the design to the Terry Spring Company, based in Redditch.  Carwardine died in 1947 at the age of 60.
