Cache Overview

A relaxed hike along the old Humboldt Road will take you to the cache, and the location of a historic photograph.

Cache Specifics

The recommended path to the cache starts at the south-west end of Humboldt Trail in the City of Chico's Upper Bidwell Park (coordinates of the trailhead are listed). You’ll hike about 1/2 mile gradually uphill to reach the cache. The terrain rating is based on the recommended path. Parking is available near the Humboldt Trail trailhead.

There is also a shorter, and very steep, path some may choose. Lastly, there is access from the north-east end of Humboldt Trail, but "No Trespassing" signs warn against that approach.

You might encounter a rattlesnake, a tick or poison oak...so be careful!

The cache is in a medium-sized container. There’s room for small items.

Humboldt Road History

The Humboldt Trail follows the path of old Humboldt Road. This road connected Chico with the mines of western Nevada and southern Idaho. The road was built as a business venture between John Bidwell and his financial partners.

Historic Photograph Site

A historic image was captured a short distance from the cache site around 1903. The location of the image can be seen from the cache. You'll walk right through the location if you use the recommended Humboldt Trail approach. See image (shown below) and check out the waypoint coordinates. Then, grab a selfie at the site and post it!
