Geocache Description:

A lesson on how to solve alphabet puzzles. Some instruction followed by an exercise for the reader.

At the Puzzles, Puzzlers, & those who just can’t get it event, it was a brain dump, too fast for the people taking notes. Since then I've told some people that I should do a series of caches to help teach people how to solve puzzles.  I'm not going to be able to tell you how to solve all puzzle types, simply because there are an infinite number of ways to present (or hide) the coordinates to a puzzle.  Also, I haven't even solved all of the puzzles in this area, so I certainly don't know all of the ways to make up geocaching puzzles.

I will present some lessons in solving puzzles, but I won't give away all of my secrets.  Nevertheless, I will give up some of my secrets, and some of those of other people.  However, I will not specifically tell you which of my puzzles I'm giving solution methods for, nor will I do so for other peoples' puzzles.  I will make an effort to not give away how to solve others' puzzles, but in showing ways to solve puzzles some cachers' puzzles will naturally be revealed. I may also hit near someone's puzzle accidentally.  (I did that with one of 7ofClub's puzzles when I made up one of my puzzles, later solving said puzzle with a hint from 7ofClubs.)

These puzzle lessons will build upon each other.  I will assume that you've read and solved the lessons in order. There will also be a public bookmark list with this cache on the list.  The caches on this list will help you in solving some puzzles.  Please let me know if there are any others that I should add to this list.  I will be doing similar instruction, but my aim is to not reuse their information while making similar instruction.

While I'm telling you and showing you how to solve a certain type of puzzle, I will add a twist at the end. The twist will be to present you with a similar puzzle but slightly different than what I have already presented. You'll have to do some work, but it should be only one step beyond. In this way you will learn how to extend past the lesson itself.

The information above this line will generally not be repeated because I will assume that people have read this information already.

There are many ways to make a puzzle cache.  One of the simplest ways is to use letters of the alphabet instead of numbers.  For instance: A=1, B=2, C=3, ... Z=26.  However, they could also be done with A=0, B=1, C=2, etc.  You can even use just the lowest digit so A=K=U=1, B=L=V=2, ... , J=T=0.  There are also a few other variations of this theme that can be used, like numbering the alphabet backwards. And, or course, lower-case letters can be used too, sometimes with the same numbers as the upper-case (capital) letters and sometimes continuing the numbers: a=27, b=28, c=29, ... z=52..

Geocache puzzles are meant to be solved by geocachers so there is usually some way to calibrate which of these translation scales to use.

For instance, the posted coordinates can be given as DAADIDD AABJDIHC, or DKwr KTwHC. Now try to figure out this one: WPWRWW ZGRSX. (See above for help.)

They can even be done with different alphabets, as I'm doing with the actual coordinates for this cache. This is the twist.

You can validate your puzzle solution with certitude.

Congratulations to UsLaynes for being first-to-find on this cache.

Update 22 Aug 2016: I have had some inquiries regarding the puzzle. The twist is nothing other than finding the alphabet that is used in the puzzle. You then use the order of the letters in that alphabet, according to Wikipedia.
