UPDATE August 21, 2024: The Lone Cedar Sign has blown down. This story is going to be lost to history.
Located along Fremont County Road 132.
For many years a large old cedar tree stood on this corner as a landmark of sorts. I can't remember all the details, but several years ago there was a dispute between neighbors and one of them cut the tree down. According to the fading sign the tree was 349 years old at the time. I don't remember if there were any formal charges filed, but I'm pretty sure there were no winners in this sad case.
Thanks to d.digger for the following additional information:
The cedar was the victim of a dispute between the people who lived beyond this point and the owner of a proposed (now a real thing) landfill. Their argument was that the landfill was to be built with nothing more than a packed clay liner on the aquifer that was supplying their drinking water. The landfill owner cut the tree before he had approval from the county commissioners and the tree was on the county right-of-way. He was never prosecuted, and you can see the results of the vote.
If anyone has additional information please post it in your log and I will add it to the description.
Beyond the fence is private property. Don't go there.
