Discover Telluride History! Tucked in the “Savage Basin and the Tomboy Mine” cache are fun historic photos as well as the remarkable stories behind mines, men, women and sometimes children that worked and survived in this remote mountain basin.
Tomboy Mine was one of the most lucrative mines in the Telluride region. The town of Tomboy, also in Savage Basin, once boasted nearly 1,000 residents despite its remote location and an elevation of over 11,500ft. The town was abandoned in the 1920s, leaving behind a now dilapidated ghost town.
"Savage Basin and the Tomboy Mine” can be found within the ruins of the town of Tomboy. It is possible to reach the site with a 4x4 high clearance vehicle, but the hike from Telluride (about 5m one way) is also amazing. Be prepared for some significant elevation gain!
This cache was created by the Telluride Historical Museum. We’ve hidden five historic caches throughout the area—be sure to find them all!
