While researching this puzzle I found training information on how to use a phone from silent 1920s films all the way to the 1962 World's Fair.  It seemed strange to me that someone would need that much training to use a telephone, but it all depends on your frame of reference.  A visit to a York museum with a mechanical telephone exchange exhibit was a venture into the unknown for my son, who had never used a rotary dial phone and needed to be shown how to make a call.  When I made a call without touching the dial by using only the switchhook he was amazed. I realized that we've gone full circle and what I thought was common knowlege is becoming a lost art.
