A return to “The Elephant Graveyard” Letterbox Hybrid

This cache has been archived.

igator210: This container has been having water issues. I decided to remove the container instead of trying to fix it up. The container is 15 years old and is getting a little tired. Maybe I'll get it fixed up and deployed sometime in the future.

Geocache Description:

On May 24th, 2007, Spoongouge and Bad Smoothie created a cache called “The Elephant Graveyard”. It was a fairly straight forward two part multi. Over time, WP1 had a few issues, and by the time I found it, WP1 had been transformed into one of the most unique waypoints I had ever seen. The coordinates were etched into a bolt that was attached to the old boathouse.

Alas, in 2015, the old boathouse was torn down to make room for a new boathouse and conference center. With the new construction, it was evident that it was time for “The Elephant Graveyard” to be retired.

With that, I present this tribute cache. I’ve turned this into a Letterbox Hybrid cache so that you can follow in the steps of the multi cache. Please read the cache description so you can follow in Spoongouge's footstep. The description will also give you the clues to where the cache is.

You can park at N 43° 11.277 W 077° 30.672 and follow the road all the way down to the new boathouse (If the gate is open you may drive down, but there is a risk of getting locked in).  The orginal WP1 was at the posted coordinates. Now its just a quick stop on your journey. The coordinate you found would lead you along the yellow trail to N 43° 11.527 W 077° 30.895, which is where you need to head towards now.

As you approach this set of coordinates, you can put away your GPS, you won’t find the cache there. At the time the original cache was hidden, Spoonegouge had this little taunt: “The final location will only take the cacher to the location of the Elephant Graveyard, the rest is up to you.” Whether by design or by chance, this left a pretty wide area to search. It was only with his hint that people where able to narrow down the search. His cryptic hint: "The final is behind the second of three Kings." This cache is hidden in the same spot his hint leads to, about 70' from the coordinates. It was because of his hint that inspired me to create this as a letterbox.

I never met Spoongouge, so I don’t have any stories to tell, but I know he left a lasting impact on the local community. Being a tribute cache, if you have any stories, please share. I’ve left the old logbook in the cache as a time capsule, but please only sign the new log.

There is an unactived TB for the First to Find

Please don't take the Elephant stamp or the ink pad.
