In 1903, the state acquired this 80-by-130-foot parcel of land at Bemus Point for $450. From then until 1973, this site was a fish hatchery used to raise the famous Chautauqua Lake Muskellunge (“Muskie.”) In 1973, all fish production was moved across the lake to Prendergast Point. The hatchery system at Bemus Point and Prendergast became the largest muskellunge hatchery in the world. Little remains of the original Bemus Hatchery except the garage which is now used for equipment storage by the Village of Bemus Point.
