Geocache Description:

Railroad boxcar remains along the old Valsetz railroad. Rails were salvaged in the early 1980s. The town of Valsetz was bulldozed and burned at the same time. Parts of the old railroad grade are now logging roads.

It appears this boxcar wrecked and parts of it were salvaged along with replacing a couple bent rails. Part of the boxcar is down the hill. You can hike the old grade about 1.5 miles in past a gate from the SE or hike 1 mile in from the north or hike cross country and across a creek a shorter distance from the West. East of the boxcar the old grade washed out at a large fill (see pictures), but the rest of the grade/road is good. While on the old grade I noticed the rock was smooth river rock instead of crushed pit rock that would be used on roads today. I also found lots of rusty parts along the grade. The railroad was built about 100 years ago. Cache is black peanut butter jar.

During fire season the entire area(public and private land) is closed to the public and all gates are locked.

Recreational access is day use only. No camping. No fires.

The name Valsetz was a shortened version of the original company: Valley and Siletz Railroad.
