This cache forms part of our Ghosts of Pietermaritzburg series which follows things that goes booo in the night…
One of the most famous ghosts in Maritzburg is the mystery lady in white who inhabits Macrorie House. She was supposedly the wife of the head warder of the jail in Burger Street. She was having an affair with someone high up in Government House.
At this time there was reputed to be a tunnel that ran from Government House to Fort Napier built as an escape route for the governor. It was the ideal place for the lovers to meet.
One night things went horribly wrong for them when the lady's husband followed her. The enraged husband, using his bunch of keys as the weapon, killed them both directly beneath Macrorie House. Previous curators of the Macrorie House Museum has never slept a night there. Not because they are afraid of ghosts, but because the beds are so hard!
