The lecture “Our Girls” was given to the congregation of the Presbyterian Church on Christmas Eve 1873 by Dr. Dio Lewis. It spurred them to a meeting on Christmas Day where they drafted an appeal which would later be used as a model for the Temperance Movement that spread across the country. By Jan. 2 1874 they had gotten all of the saloons in Washington C.H. closed, and by Feb. 11th every salon in Fayette Co. was closed. Many of the women from this church were called upon to travel to nearby cities and towns to educate other groups on ways to start, improve and carry on the temperance movement.
