Members of the Presbyterian Church held anti-slavery meetings as early as 1834. After you find this cache take some extra time to search the grave site of Rev. William Dickey, and pay your respects. This Presbyterian minister and his congregation not only spoke out against slavery but were an integral part of the Underground Rail Road in Ohio. They fed, clothed and gave money to hundreds of African Americans' who were escaping slavery and trying to start a new life. Many of the former slaves settled in the Bloomingburg and surrounding areas and became conductors of the Underground Rail Road.
