I begynnelsen var osäkerheten. USA:s överbefälhavare sade: -Precision, bli till. Och precision blev till. ÖB’n såg att precisionen var god, och han kallade tiden Geocachingens tidevarv, och osäkerhetens tid kallade han förspilld.
Ungefär så gick det till när SA-funktionen, som gjorde att NATO var ensamma om precision innan, stängdes av med den berömda, men icke-existerande, Stora Blåa Strömbrytaren. Det var den andra maj år 2000. Redan dagen efter,
2000-05-03, gömde Dave Ulmer den allra första gömman och postade koordinaterna på ett nätforum för teknikintresserade. Mike Teauge blev den förste att logga in sig i gästboken, och snart spred sig ryktet och fler ville prova det som Dave gjort. Snart blev det rörigt på forumet, och Mike gjorde en viktig insats genom att samla olika utläggares koordinater i en lista på sin egen hemsida. Framåt sensommaren 2000 blev webbutvecklaren Jeremy Irish intresserad, och såg att man nog behövde utveckla en mer specifik hemsida för det som nu börjat kallas Geocaching. Han registrerade geocaching.com 2000-09-02 med 75 geocacher, och den sidan lever som väl är kvar än idag.
På den här tiden gömdes i princip inga burkar stadsnära, utan ett ordentligt besök i naturen krävdes för att hitta gömmorna. Vanliga gömställen var bergstoppar, klippor, raviner och
utkiksplatser. Denna gömma är gömd på just en sådan plats. Det här naturreservatet heter Dovrasjödalen och består av orörd mark längs tre långsmala sjöar i en gemensam spricka i urberget. Naturen är storslagen och orörd. Parkerar du vid norra änden passerar du både en fornborg och mäktiga Dovra kyrka (se bild i galleriet) på din väg mot cachen. This is roughly how things happened when the Selective Availability function was turned off with the famous, but non-existing, Big Blue Switch. That was May 2nd, 2000. Already the day after that,
2000-05-03, Dave Ulmer hid the very first stash and posted the coordinates on a webforum for GPS enthusiasts. Mike Teauge was the first man to ever sign a gusetbook in a stash. Soon the forum was filled with people who wanted to try what Dave had done. It was hard to get a grip on the many posts, so Mike made an important contribution when he compiled the posts on his own webpage. During the summer of 2000 web developer Jeremy Irish got interested, and he saw the need for a dedicated webpage for the stash hunt, that now had got the name Geocaching. 2009-09-02 he registered geocaching.com with 75 geocaches, and to our joy the site is still up and running.
In those days caches weren’t usually hidden in civilized areas. Often one needed to go out deep into the wild to find them. Common places were hilltops, cliffs, canyons and vantage points. This cache is hidden in a place just like that. This nature reserve is called Dovrasjödalen, and consists of three narrow lakes in one long crack in the primary rock, surrounded by untouched forests.
