Geocache Description:

Black Saturday, February 7th 2009 was Victoria's worst bushfire disasters in history. Across the state of Victoria, approximately 400 fires started on the 7th.   The weather conditions on Black Saturday were some of the worse bushfire conditions ever recorded. Temperatures reached 46 degrees Celsius with winds exceeding 100 km per hour.  By the end of this significant event, 173 people died, 141 were injured and 2,100 homes were lost.

In just over an hour, the fire had reached this location- even with the numerous CFA and DSE appliances, 2 aircraft and numerous personnel actively involved in the fire fight.  The terrain presented challenges to the fire fighting efforts, such as the undulating land, rock walls, volcanic rock outcrops, farming land and crops.  A sudden wind change came across the fireground at 14:15 hours, pushing the fire in a North Easterly direction- and right pas the front of the Pomborneit Fire Station!
