Geocache Description:

Black Saturday, February 7th 2009 was Victoria's worst bushfire disasters in history. Across the state of Victoria, approximately 400 fires started on the 7th.   The weather conditions on Black Saturday were some of the worse bushfire conditions ever recorded. Temperatures reached 46 degrees Celsius with winds exceeding 100 km per hour.  By the end of this significant event, 173 people died, 141 were injured and 2,100 homes were lost.

By approximately 1630 hours, the fire spread had stopped and crews on the ground commenced the arduous task of making sure the fire was completely out.  The area of this cache is close to the most far reaching fire area – showing the size and speed of this fire.  For several days after February 7th, rotating crews remained on scene ensuring that the fire was completely out.  The total fire area of the Pomborneit- Weerite fire was 1,008 hectares, however there was no loss of life.  Damages were limited to stock, crops, fencing and some private infrastructure.

Final Fire Area: Weerite-Pomborneit Fire
