As always, the day will begin with an event from 9 AM to 10:30 AM for the breakfast and discussion. The breakfast will be held at the Gateway Restaurant. There will be open discussion of the abandoned turnpike, its history and geocaching along the trail. Upon the conclusion of this event, everyone is invited to continue the day with us as we make our way to the parking area of the Abandoned Turnpike for take the group photo and a day of hiking and/or biking the abandoned turnpike.
Whereas the event officially concludes at 10:30, there is an entire day’s worth of adventure waiting for you after the event. More information about the hike and bike will be shared at the event. The entire trail is over 9-miles long, end to end, though those hiking will not be completing the entire trail in one take. Those biking can expect the ride to take roughly 3 to 5 hours, depending on your pace. Those of us doing the hike will likely take all day. Comfortable shoes are a must. There are two abandoned tunnels along the trail to explore, as well as discovering the inner workings of the old tunnels.
WARNING: In past years, we had several people blow tires, break chains, or crash due to the crumbling pavement on the road. Please come prepared!!! Last year we had about 70+ people at this event and it was a hoot. In the past, we have encountered the undead while in the tunnels. This year, I cannot guarantee that we will have zombies in the tunnels... or can I? MUAHAHAHAHAHA! Please note, due to changes in the event listing guidelines, this event officially only includes the breakfast.
