Thirty Five (+36) on the SCT Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

J Grouchy: Rethinking this one. It's been an unlucky spot for a cache, so maybe I'll try again in a different spot nearby.

Geocache Description:

You are looking for a 50 cal. ammo can (brand new at the time of this post) in what, for many of you, is a familiar location.

A while back, during one of my lunchtime geocaching excursions, I found a cache called "Thirty Five on the SCT" (GCN6QK). It was placed way back in 2005, adopted in 2009...then unfortunately fell into a state of disrepair in the last few years.  At some point in 2015 it appeared to have lost its lid, which was probably the final nail in its coffin.  I made an offer to adopt the cache, but that was not successful and it ended up getting archived.

Anyway, a couple months back I was in a local wholesale warehouse and noticed they were selling a two-pack of ammo cans for $20!  I picked up two sets and decided I'd find good homes for these as geocaches.  I recalled this cache and how unfortunate it was to lose a good old one, so I decided to make use of this location and put in a nice, durable and watertight ammo can which will hopefully last another ten or more years.

The name, as you may have noticed, is a reference to my own cache count.  This one makes 71 total for me: 35 (as an homage to the original cache) plus 34 others that I've placed, and then taking into account the two caches I adopted in Grant Park.  If you found the old cache, you will know where this is hidden.  I'll warn anyone coming to this one that there is plenty of poison ivy in the vicinity, plus all the other usual stuff one finds in a wooded area in Georgia.  Approaching from the west, I'd say the easiest exit from the trail is from a small grassy clearing about 200 feet before you get to GZ.

As for the old cache, it was still there, collecting water and muck.  It was unsalvageable, so I removed it and kept the inner cylindrical container that holds the log sheets. At some point the original CO may want that, but if not, I may put it inside the new container for posterity.  Enjoy your trip down the SCT!
