The pier dates back to 1865. At one time paddle steamers could dock at the end to offer trips to tourists, and there was also a theatre, a roof garden restaurant and 12 shops! Bognor's first cinema was on the pier and this must have been a very lively place. During the second world war the Royal Navy used the pier as an observation station and it was named HMS Patricia. The pier gained Grade II protection in 1989 and currently the Friends of Bognor Pier are raising funds for its restoration. It is in a rather sorry state now, but still offers a walk above the sea.
