UCA2016.15:"Signal"[FINAL NEAR NEW MINAS] Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

juniorwoodchuckhuey: The 2016 Uncommon Common Art season is over, so I am archiving this seasonal cache. Look for new caches in new locations in May and June 2017. Except for the final (which will come done sometime soon) and one permanent installation (#8) this is the last one to come down. I had an early morning walk at about dawn, after an early-morning errand.

I'm going to Maritime Mega in Truro NS, on Aug 5, 2017!
See maritimemega.com or go to the official event cache at GC6MET1

Geocache Description:

To solve this multistage geocache, visit the posted coordinates and get the answer to some questions.  The final location IS far away. The final is on South Mountain near Exit 12 on Highway 101. The art installations at the posted coordinates and the final coordinates are meant to light up after dark.

This cache will be archived sometime around October 11, as the UCA 2016 season is ending soon.

Congratulations to Stick People for FTF!

This is part of a series of 16 geocaches placed near outdoor art installations. The geocaches will only be available until mid-October. There will also be a bonus geocache for those who find all 16 in the series (look for a number between 1 and 99 on the logbook or container). For other geocaches in the series, see the bookmark list UCA 2016.

Stop 15: "Signal" by Ben Mosher

Artist's description of the installation:

"Pursuing an interest in communication technologies Mosher has responded to Kings County’s unique place in communications history. Under Edward Duke of Kent’s instruction a visual semaphore line was constructed intersecting present day Kings County. This military communications line has been reimagined for civilian use.

Edward’s visual semaphore line began operating in 1797 and ran from Halifax, to Windsor, through Kings County, then on to Annapolis Royal. A boat then relayed messages to St. John and Fredericton by crossing the Bay of Fundy."

To determine the final coordinates, go to the posted coordinates and answer the questions below.  Note that the posted coordinates are on the Woodville Hiking Trails, along the lookoff loop. It is about a 1 km walk from the parking coordinates to the posted coordinates.

The final coordinates are N 45 02.ABC W 064 29.DEF. Answer these questions to get the coordinates:

  1. What is the environment like at the installation? If it is an open field, then A=2. If it is beside a stream then A=3. If it is a forest on a slope, then A=1.
  2. According to the sign at the installation, "Every 30 and BB seconds..."
  3. Continuing the above question, what happens every 30 and BB seconds? If it is "sending or responding to a message from the light on South Mountain", then C=7. If it is "Beeps softly", then C=6.
  4. Look up at the top point of the art. How many wires connect to the top? Call this "D".
  5. What is the main color of the art? If it is black, then E=6. If it is white, then E=5. If it is shiny steel, then E=7.
  6. The installation is on a numbered trail. Find the 2-digit number on signs nailed to trees along this trail near the installation. Subtract 4, and call the answer "F".
As a partial check, A+B+C=16 and D+E+F=17.

You can validate your puzzle solution with certitude.
