On the 21st of March 1909, a "Marathon big race" was performed.
It was 31.7-kilometer-race from Minatogawa-landfill, Kobe to Nishinari-ohashi, Osaka.
For this race, the title "marathon" was used for the first time in Japan.
A monument "The birthplace of Marathon in Japan" is built at the start point of Kobe marathon.

明治42年（1909）3月21日、神戸の湊川埋め立て地から大阪の西成大橋までの31.7キロの「マラソン大競争」が行われました。日本で「マラソン」という名称を使ったのは、この大会が初めてと言われています。
神戸マラソン（2011年11月20日実施）のスタート地点でもある神戸市役所前に、「日本マラソン発祥の地 神戸」の記念碑が建てられています。
