Geocache Description:

This EarthCache will lead you up to the Risvica Hill. There is a nicely prepared geological trail that starts at the waypoint "Start of Geological Trail". The geological trail leads to the Risvica Hill peak, and along the trail there are several educational info boards about the geology of Risvica Hill.

Start of Geological Trail on Risvica Hill

Going up from Zelenjak valley to the highest peak of Risvica Hill is like a journey through more than 200 million years of history. During such a long geological period, several continents and oceans developed and disappeared, as well as periods of tropical climate and ice age. Living world changed also drastically. Lots of new animal and plant species appeared, while at the same time a lot of them vanished from the face of the Earth. Some of those turbulent events left their mark in the rocks of Risvica Hill.

Geologic Time Scale

The story of Risvica Hill begins some 220 million years ago, during the Triassic, a geologic period that extends from roughly 252.17 to 201.3 million years ago. During the Triassic, almost all the Earth's land mass was concentrated into a single supercontinent centered more or less on the equator, called Pangaea ("all the land"). From the east a vast gulf entered Pangaea, the Tethys sea. It opened farther westward in the mid-Triassic, at the expense of the shrinking Paleo-Tethys Ocean, an ocean that existed during the Paleozoic. The remaining shores were surrounded by the world-ocean known as Panthalassa ("all the sea").

Continental Drift

Another important period for the history of Risvica Hill was the Miocene. The Miocene is the first geological epoch of the Neogene Period and extends from about 23.03 to 5.332 million years ago. Continents continued to drift toward their present positions. Of the modern geologic features, only the land bridge between South America and North America was absent. Mountain building took place in western North America, Europe, and East Asia. Both continental and marine Miocene deposits are common worldwide with marine outcrops common near modern shorelines.

Logging Tasks

To log this EarthCache answer the following questions:

1. Along the geological trail up to the Risvica Hill peak, you will see several types of rocks that Risvica Hill is built of. What are the names of those rocks?
2. Which one of them is formed during the Triassic period?
3. Explain the process of formation of rocks that were formed during Miocene.

Send your answers through my profile at geocaching.com (through e-mail or message center) and NOT in a log. You don't have to wait for me to approve your answers. Once you send your answers feel free to log this EarthCache as found. If there are problems with your answers, I will contact you.

Priča o Risvičkoj gori započinje prije nekih 220 milijuna godina, tijekom geološkog razdoblja trijasa (prije 252,17 do 201,3 milijuna godina).
