Good Luck, Olympians!

Field hockey is a team sport of the hockey family. The earliest origins of the sport date back to the Middle Ages in England, Scotland and the Netherlands. The game can be played on a grass field or a turf field as well as an indoor board surface. Each team plays with eleven players including the goalie. Players use sticks made out of wood, carbon fiber, fiberglass or a combination of carbon fiber and fiber glass in different quantities (with the higher carbon fiber stick being more expensive and less likely to break) to hit a round, hard, rubber like ball. The length of the stick depends on the player's individual height. Only the flat side of the stick is allowed to be used. Goalies often have a different kind of stick however they can also use an ordinary field hockey stick. The specific goal keeping sticks have another curve on the end of the stick. The uniform consists of shin-guards, shoes, shorts, a mouth guard and a jersey.

At the turn of the 21st century , the game is played globally, with particular popularity throughout western Europe, the Indian subcontinent, Australia, New Zealand, Southern and Eastern United States, and Southern Africa. Hockey is the national sport of Pakistan, and is sometimes assumed to be India's national sport as well, although officially India does not have a national sport. The term "field hockey" is used primarily in Canada and the United States where ice hockey is more popular. In the United States field hockey is regarded as a "girl's" sport. Elsewhere in the world, it is more co-ed or male dominated.

The game is played on a field about the size of a football field about 100 yards long and 60 yards wide (91.40m x 55.0m) divided by a center line and a 25-yard line on each side of the field. A striking circle is marked 16 yards (14.63m) out from each goal post. All international matches are played on watered down artificial turf. Goal cages are 7 feet (2.14m) high, 12 feet (3.66m) wide and 4 feet (1.22m) deep. Boards on the back and side of the cages are 18 inches high. Two umpires on the field officiate the match. An additional umpire may sit at the scorer's table. The ball must be passed or dribbled down the field with the flat side of the stick. Only the goalie may use another body part to block or move the ball. Any use of a body part for a regular player, including that of a foot by accident, will result in a foul. Depending on the foul, the team might be awarded a penalty shot from the corner near the goal. A limited number of the players from the opposing team are near during that time. A goal is scored when an attacker strikes the ball into the goal from within the striking circle. Players may not shield the ball using their body or stick. All players must have an equal chance to play the ball.

Play consists of two halves which vary from 25-30 minutes in length for high school to 35 minutes at the professional level. There is a seven minute half time during which the teams switch sides. Time outs are only permitted in high school and collegiate play. They are limited in number and requests for more may result in a penalty. Players are rotated in and out of the game without stopping play making for a fast paced game.

And a special thanks to my dad, (DaddyMoose??) for assisting with the cache construction.Congrats to Wheels & MrsWheels for winning the gold....er, FTF on this one!
