Geocache Description:

Sandøy is a small island in the chain of islands called "Nordøyane". It is also the island that has given name to this municipality "Sandøy", even though the council is located on neighbouring Harøya. Sandøy is a beautiful and flat, and still inhabited  (36 people), place. Especially known for its beaches. Few tourists visit here, though.

Sandøya arrival

Want to find your quiet spot and part of a beach? This is the place to come. The church is also worth a look. There are bikes that you can borrow, for free, not far from the ferry quay. The island is easily bike-able and there are a lot of places to rest or set up a picnic around the island. Be considerate to the amazing birdlife here though, especially during the months of May-August.

Sandøy was originally populated due to fisheries, as is the case for most islands with settlements around the Norwegian coast. Islands like Sandøy had something extra, though. There is also farmable land here. That means that families often were "fish famerers" usually organized so that the husband was out fishing and the wife tended the small farm.

Families that had both of these means of getting food and income were usually the "main" families of an island and others could often be dwellers on their land or income, whilst contrubuting to production.

Sandøy beaches

The cache is a fairly easy find. Please leave everything as it was when you found it. Happy caching!
