This is the site of the old Bubbles Indoor-Outdoor Swimming Pool that was sadly shut in 1999.Originally built on the site of a former ship breaking business, 'Bubbles was built as a Super Swimming Stadium in 1936 at a cost of £185,000 to build. The venue could accommodate for 1,200 bathers and 3000 spectators, almost becoming quite a success for the seaside town of Morecambe. It's popularity increased after the second world war when the venue became the location for the Miss Great Britain competitions. Up to 50 women contested in weekly heats, receiving 1 for their triumph. This prize later increased to 10 for first, 5 for second and 3 for third in 1955. However as the bathing beauty contests started to decline in stature so did the stadium. This decline was not helped by the lack of a roof over the stadium (making it extremely cold at times) and the appearance of cracks in the structure. And the stadium was finally closed in 1975 by Lancaster City Council. Over a period of two years local Councillors debated on whether to spend 1 million on the site or to spend the money elsewhere. The cheaper option was agreed, and the stadium was demolished to make way for a smaller fun pool site. The outdoor pool was opened in 1979 followed by the indoor pool being opened ten years later in 1989, thus becoming quite the popular attraction and a little glimmer of hope for the already declining Morecambe town. The indoor-outdoor pool site boasted two ‘white knuckle’ rides, a water slide and white water channel. But just 10 years later the indoor-outdoor pools saw the last swimmers taking a dip before packing up their towels and leaving it all behind. In 1999 the two pools finally closed their doors to the public and, at first, there was no reason to believe that the complex would fully reopen in time for the 2000 summer season.
