Geocache Description:

Rudolfina - zaboravljena cesta ...

Rudolfina - the forgotten road...

HR

ENG

The branch of Jozefina road from Josipdol over Velika Kapela and Ogulin (ascends to even 1,083 m a/s) to Novi Vinodolski was built in 1871 on the initiative of the Croatian Ban Ivan Mažuranić. The road was named after the son of Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph I. From Ogulin to the sea the road is 68 km long and it was fully paved only in 2005.

Pogled

On this beautiful plateau Pleteno are large lawns on which live colonies of one of the rarest species of ants of the genus Myrmica. These ants are on the Red List of the world's most endangered species, and butterfly plavac is dependent on them, another world endangered insect species. Caterpillars of the butterflies Plavac spend more than eight months in the ant nest feeding on ant larvae, in the same time exuding sweet secretion which feeds the ants. In June the butterflies fly out from the anthill and after mating there lay their eggs to a specific plant, cross-gentian which also grows in the plateau Pleteno.
