Geocache Description:

[ENG]

To find the Letterbox Hybrid “Balti meri” letterboxers must find the tallest lighthouse in Estonia. When facing the lighthouse, the cache is behind a big tree on the left. Geocachers may search this as a traditional cache. The box is on the listed coordinates. Please do not take the letterboxing stamp with you!

Pakri lighthouse is situated on the north-western tip of the Pakri peninsula on a high slate bluff marking the water's edge of a very important shipping lane along the northern coast.

The first limestone lighthouse is known to have been erected on the Pakri peninsula in 1724. The location was allegedly picked by czar Peter the Great himself. In 1889, a new limestone lighthouse was built about 80m away from the old one, which was then regarded to have been built hazardously close to the edge of the limestone clint. The old building was thus partly demolished and used as a paraffin store. Although the lighthouse outbuildings were severely damaged in World War II, three staff houses, cellar, sauna and three storage buildings have preserved. Today, the lighthouse is listed as an architectural monument and was fully conserved in 2001. The remains of the old lighthouse are deteriorating and might not survive for long, as the limestone clint with the building on top of it, is soon predicted to fall into the sea.

The lighthouse is open for visitors 1.May-31.September every day 10:00-20:00 and 1.October-30.April Friday to Sunday 12:00-19:00. Although the cache is not inside the fence, it is recommended to search the cache during these hours.

See sai alguse juba 1854. aastal. Rohkem kirjakasti aarete otsimisest on kirjas lehel Letterboxing North America.

Pakri poolsaar (varasema nimega Leetse poolsaar) asub Mandri-Eesti loodeosas Põhjarannikul Pakri lahe ja Lahepere lahe vahel. Poolsaare loodetipul kõrgel paeklindi äärel asub Pakri tuletorn, mis märgistab põhjaranniku merepoolset serva tähtsa laevatee ääres ning aitab orienteeruda.

Esimene tuletorn rajati Peeter l käsul 1724 vana rootsiaegse tulepaagi kohale. 1760 ehitati samale kohale 48 jala kõrgune paekivitorn, mille laternas põlesid küünlad. 1808 kõrgendati torni 20 jala võrra ja laternas hakati kasutama 15 kanepiõlilampi ja hõbetatud kumerpeegleid. Vanast tuletornist jäeti lammutamisel alles I korrus, mida kasutati laona. Vana torni alus on pangaserval praegugi näha.

1889 ehitati praeguseni säilinud kõrge 8-tahulise soklikorrusega punane kivitorn. Torn on Eesti ranniku kõrgeim: tule kõrgus merepinnast 73m, alumine läbimõõt 7,4 m, metallist laterna läbimõõt 4,5 m. Tuletornikompleks on kultuurimälestisena riikliku kaitse all ja tuletorn kuulub The International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) koostatud 100 tuletorni-arhitektuurimälestise nimekirja.

Info tuletorni külastuse kohta on leitav: www.pakrituletorn.ee
