Forgotten Australian #05 - Richard Carleton Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Throsbyonchurch: Goodnight. Sad to see you go, but times a changing.

Couldn't find in situ - pretty sure it's been muggled by road workers. The area around it has been cleaned up. It's interesting most of these have disappeared yet a couple were still in place.

Geocache Description:

Forgotten Australian

Richard Carleton

Richard George Carleton (1943-2006), journalist, was born on 11 July 1943 at Bowral, New South Wales, son of George Carleton.

He was educated at Sydney Grammar School and graduated from the University of New South Wales.

In October 1943, aged 3 months, Richard was awarded ‘Beautiful Baby’ in the Baby Show conducted by Bowral P.C.A.

In the 1960s he was a reporter for the ABC on ‘This Day Tonight’, and a presenter of ‘State of the Nation’, remaining in these roles until he left for a position on the 2GB Radio in 1976, and followed by what began as a lifelong love of travelling and researching overseas, producing films in Indonesia and the Middle East. Richard joined the BBC in London in 1977 working on the ‘Tonight’ program, returning to Australia in 1979.

During 1986, Richard was a co-presenter of ‘The Carleton Walsh Report’ on the ABC, with journalist Max Walsh.

In 1987 Carleton began his most famous television journalism role, as a reporter on ’60 Minutes.’ His career with the program spanned almost 20 years; he visited many locations around the world investigating political climates.

In 2006 he visited Chernobyl and was given unprecedented access to the sarcophagus built over the ruined nuclear reactor, including a brief visit to the abandoned control room.

Richard won five Penguin Awards and three Logie Awards during his time with 60 Minutes and at the ABC.

Richard experienced a number of health scares, the first in 1988 when he underwent heart bypass surgery, another in 2003 when he suffered a heart attack, and the diagnosis of prostate cancer in 2005.

Richard Carleton died on 7 May 2006 at Beaconsfield, Tasmania. Richard collapsed from a massive heart attack during a press conference at the Beaconsfield gold mine, shortly after questioning the mine manager on the cause of the mine disaster. He was taken by ambulance to the Launceston General Hospital but died on the way to the hospital.
