Edinburg WPA Auditorium (now known as the Edinburg General Store).
In the 1930’s, the Great Depression was at its height. Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR), a Democrat, was running for President and he promised our country a “NEW DEAL.” From President Roosevelt and the “NEW DEAL” came the CCC – “Civilian Conservation Corps”, the PWA – “Public Works Administration”, and the WPA – “Works Progress Administration”, all organizations meant to put the American public back to work and to build America’s infrastructure.
The Art Deco structure was built in 1938 as part of the Works Progress Administration jobs program. It is a wood frame building two stories high, sheathed in boards to which a stucco finish has been applied. There is a central projecting section on the front facade. The building was used as a local social center through the middle decades of the 20th century, with roller skating being a popular pastime. It is now home to the Edinburg General Store and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.
