동막골 유원지 일대에서는 중생대 백악기 융회암이 넓게 분포한다. 응회암은 화산에서 뿜어져 나온 화산쇄설물인 화산재와 암석 부스러기 등이 쌓여 만들어진 암석이다. 동막리 일대에서 응회암이 넓게 나타나는 것은 이 부근에서 화산활동이 활발했다는 것을 보여주는 예가 된다. 즉, 화산이 폭발하면서 화산재와 화산탄 등이 공중으로 상승하였다가 땅 위를 흐르는 용암과 만나 함께 퇴적된 것이 동막리 응회암이다. 하천을 따라 올라가면서 응회암의 입자 크기가 점점 커지는 현상을 볼 수 있는데, 이것은 용암이 분출한 곳이 하천의 상류에 있기 때문이다.
The tuff of the Cretaceous era in Mesozoic period is broadly observed in Dongmak-ri area. Tuff is a type of rock made of volcanic ash ejected from a vent during a volcanic eruption. The broad observation of the tuff in Dongmak-ri area means that the volcanic activities were very active here. When you trace up the valley you can see that the particle size of the tuff found are getting bigger. This phenomenon explains the lava eruption occurred somewhere in the upper region of the river.
응회암은 입자의 크기에 따라 크게 세가지로 분류된다.
The tuff can be classified into three categories according to the particle size of the rock.
응회암<凝灰巖,Tuff>
응회암은 화산 쇄설성 퇴적물 중 퇴적 알갱이의 크기가 2mm 이하인 화산재(0.06∼2mm)와 화산진(0.06mm 이하)이 쌓여서 굳어진 쇄설성 퇴적암이다. 응회암을 구성하는 성분은 유리질, 결정질, 암석 부스러기(암편), 이렇게 세 종류가 있다. 이 세 종류의 함유량에 따라 응회암은 유리질응회암, 결정응회암, 석질응회암으로 분류된다.
Tephra is made when magma inside the volcano is blown apart by coming into contact with the hot volcanic gases. It is common for magma to explode as the gas dissolved in it comes out of solution as the pressure decreases when it flows to the surface. These violent explosions produce solid chunks of material that then fly away from the volcano. When these chunks are smaller than 2 mm in diameter (sand-sized or smaller) they are called volcanic ash. It is made of small, slaggy pieces of magma and rock that have been tossed into the air by outbursts of steam and other gases.
화산력암<火山礫巖,Lapilli>
화산 분출물 중 2∼64mm의 화산력이 쌓여서 만들어진 화산 쇄설성 퇴적암이다. 화산력암은 64mm 이내의 화산력이 들어 있으며, 보통 층리가 잘 나타나지 않는다. 화산력 사이의 화산재는 유리질로 되어 있다. 화산력암에서 나타나는 광물 결정은 광물 특유의 독특한 결정이 나타나는데, 이것은 결정이 성장할 때 주변으로부터 방해를 받지 않았기 때문이다. 화산력암에서 주로 발견되는 결정은 석영과 장석이다. 하지만 현무암질 용암이 분출한 곳에서는 휘석이 나타난다.
Lapilli is a size classification term for tephra, which is material that falls out of the air during a volcanic eruption or during some meteorite impacts. Lapilli (singular: lapillus) means "little stones" in Latin. By definition lapilli range from 2 to 64 mm in diameter. A pyroclastic particle greater than 64 mm in diameter is known as a volcanic bomb when molten, or a volcanic block when solid. Pyroclastic material with particles less than 2 mm in diameter is referred to as volcanic ash.
화산각력암<火山角礫巖,Volcanic breccia>
화산각력(Block)과 화산탄(Bomb)은 64mm 이상의 큰 덩어리이다. 화산탄은 액체 상태로 분출된 용암이 공중을 나는 동안 굳어진 것이고, 분출 전에 이미 굳은 커다란 용암이나 분출구 주변의 암석이 부서져서 분출된 덩어리는 화산각력(Block)이라고 한다. 화산각력암은 화산탄과 화산각력으로 되어 있다. 화산각력암에 들어 있는 광물은 주로 석영이나 장석이며, 현무암질 용암이 분출하여 만들어진 화산각력암에는 휘석이 들어 있다. 화산각력암이 산출되는 지역은 응회암보다 범위가 좁다.
Volcanic Breccias are greater than 64 mm in diameter. There are lumps of the old lavas and tuffs forming the walls of the crater, etc., which have been torn away by the violent outbursts of steam, and pieces of sedimentary rocks from the deeper parts of the volcano that were dislodged by the rising lava and are often intensely baked and recrystallized by the heat to which they have been subjected. The large masses are called "volcanic bombs"; they have mostly a rounded, elliptical or pear-shaped form owing to rotation in the air before they solidified. Many of them have ribbed or nodular surfaces, and sometimes they have a crust intersected by many cracks like the surface of a loaf of bread. Any ash in which they are very abundant is called an agglomerate.
