Geocache Description:

An easy cache close to Etal Castle

There is no need to trespass on the railway to find this cache. PLEASE STAY ON THE SAFE SIDE OF THE FENCE. Plenty of space for TBs

The castle was built in the 14th century as defence against Scottish raiders on a key ford on the river Till by Robert Manners. It fell to King James IV of Scotland at the time of the Battle of Flodden in 1513 and is now a ruin maintained by the English Heritage. Further down the path is Etal station furthest point of the Hetherslaw Light Railway, and you can access a lovely path on the edge of the river taking you back to the ford from the station. Etal itself is a picturesque village famous for it's thatched pub which is sadly closed at the moment.

The Ford and Etal series is a selection of caches scattered around the Ford and Etal Estate in North Northumberland.
