In 2005, Onbetsu town was merged into Kushiro city. However, Shiranuka town, that is located between Kushiro city and Onbetsu town, did not agree to a merger with Kushiro city. So, Onbetsu town became an enclave of Kushiro city. In 1970, the population of Onbetsu town was over eight thousands, and now it is under two thousands. Please bring your pen.
音別町は、2005年釧路市と阿寒町と合併して釧路市音別町になりました。ところが、音別町と釧路市の間にある白糠町は合併に合意しなかったために音別町は釧路市の飛び地となってしまいました。1970年までは人口八千人以上もありましたが尺別炭鉱の閉山により人口は半減してしまい、現在は二千人を割っています。主な産業は林業や酪農しかありませんでしたが、今は大塚製薬と大塚食品の工場があります。
