While taking a drive through Moses Coulee, quite unexpectantly I came across this old abandoned building. It looked much like a school house so I placed a cache nearby to draw others to this area so they too could come to this spot and enjoy the view.
There is not much history on the building. It is what is left of the Highland School house appropriately located just off the Highland School Road. This one-room schoolhouse was built in 1905 and classes were held in it until 1949. The school served several surrounding communities. It was also used as a Community Hall and as a voting precinct up until the 1960s. I have found countless references through Google that this schoolhouse is located near the Highland Cemetery several miles away, but clearly that is not the case. Unfortunately this remnant of days gone by has suffered significant damage due to vandalism. Makes one sad to see. Some day, it will be little more than a pile of rubble, but for now, we can enjoy it's historical beauty and significance. Listen closely... Is that a child's laughter you hear or simply the wind....
