Historic Village of Clifton

The historic village of Clifton was an early hub for Ohio industry and travel. Col. Robert Patterson, an ancestor of James Patterson of NCR fame, chose Clifton for the site of a woolen mill built over the gorge. His mill provided material for the American army during the War of 1812.
Davis Mill was established in 1802 and is now the site of Clifton Mill. It produced meal and flour for Civil War troops.
The Accommodation Line was a major stop along the stagecoach trail which ran from Springfield to Cincinnati from 1827 to 1840.
The industry that was once around the village soon disappeared as railroad traffic bypassed the village.
Today, Clifton is a destination for many coming to visit nearby Clifton Gorge Nature Preserve as well as John Bryan State Park and Glen Helen Nature Preserve.
Entertainment is offered at the Shoebox Theatre in the Clifton Union School as well as music performances at the Clifton Opera House and the annual Clifton Gorge Music & Arts Festival held in August.
Of course, most people are aware of the annual Clifton Mill Christmas Light display which draws visitors from miles away!
