Negli anni ’50 e ’60 del secolo scorso, la bassa Ossola ed in particolare Ornavasso hanno visto il formarsi di piccole e medie imprese specializzate nella lavorazione delle pietrine per orologi. La materia prima delle cosiddette pietrine era costituita dal rubino sintetico e queste, dopo essere lavorate, erano usate come sostegno d’asse nel funzionamento soprattutto di orologi e vendute appunto nelle industrie d’orologi svizzere.
La manodopera era essenzialmente femminile, in genere si trattava di giovani ragazze chiamate “fabbrichine”, e ciò determinò un forte impatto sociale in una comunità prevalentemente contadina. Il settore giunse ad avere circa 1000 addetti che giungevano ad Ornavasso spesso in treno, provenienti anche da molti paesi limitrofi.
Verso la metà degli anni ’70 però, in un brevissimo volgere di anni, avvennne il crollo del settore a causa principalmente di questi fattori: il nuovo sistema di bucatura del rubino tramite laser, la diffusione degli orologi digitali a basso costo e il trasferimento di parte della produzione nel Terzo Mondo.

[ENG] JEWEL BEARINGS FACTORY
During the 50s and 60s of the last century, small and medium-sized companies specialised in the manufacturing of jewel bearings for clocks were set up in lower Ossola and especially in Ornavasso. The raw material for these jewel bearings was synthetic ruby and once these had been manufactured, they were used as axle support in clocks and sold as a matter of fact to clock factories in Switzerland.
The manpower was essentially female, it was usually young women called “fabbrichine” who did the job. The result was a strong social impact on a community which was mainly based on farming. The industry came to reach around 1,000 employees who often traveled by train to Ornavasso, coming also from many nearby villages.
In a very short span of time, the industry eventually collapsed towards the mid-70s. This was mainly due to three reasons: firstly, the introduction of a new system which pierced rubies with lasers; then, the spread of digital clocks at a lower price and finally, the production had partly been moved to the Third World.
