Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Little Big Econ State Forest! You seek a two Stage multi which will take about 2 miles of hiking, round trip. This cache will provide you the opportunity to experience the Barr Street Trailhead entrance, while learning how the forest was established. This cache was approved for placement under permit # LE16-02.

The Little Big Econ State Forest is one of the gems of Seminole County. Known widely for the hiking, kayaking, equestrian, fishing and camping opportunities, this natural land within Seminole County provides tranquility and recreation for many Central Florida residents all year long. The forest covers over 10,000 acres and was established by the Florida Legislature in 1994. The name of the forest finds its origins in the combination of the Little Econlockhatchee River and the larger Econlockhatchee River. The name of this forest in interesting since no portion of the Little Econlockhatchee River is actually in this forest.

The Muskogee word 'Econlockhatchee' translates literally to “earth-mound stream” and means “river of many mounds”. Native Americans living within the area several generations ago, named the river for the many man-made mounds that were found along the river system. The property that is now the Little Big Econ State Forest has been used for many different activities throughout the years. These activities include: turpentine distilleries, cattle ranching and row crops.

The land that is now known as the Little Big Econ State Forest is managed by the State of Florida Forestry Service, whose primary goal above providing a recreational area, is to restore and maintain native ecosystems, protect and manage plants and animals, protect archaeological and historical sites and practice sustainable forest and agricultural management activities.

Parking for this multi can be found at the Barr Street Trailhead entrance at the included waypoint. For your safety and ease of travel, it is suggested that you remain on the designated trails for the majority of this hunt. A short, off trail hike wil be required at both stages. Very little bushwhacking is required. Take the time to enjoy the short hike and enjoy a portion of what this forest has to offer and enjoy the view of the river after locating stage one and enroute to stage two. Remember to bring water, sunscreen, bug spray, and your phone, and any other personal care items you require.

In the event of an emergency, there are rescue signs located throughout the forest marked with unique alphanumerics, such as “LE13”. Should you become lost or injured, find one of those markers and summon assistance from the Sheriff’s Office using either the non-emergency number, (407) 665-6650, or 911, depending on the severity of your emergency.

Placed with permission. Daily-use fee required and paid via QR code at the State Forest parking lot entrance. Congrats to RAHNNERGOTHUC for the FTF!
