Some say that the 15 or so local basalt caves are 6,000 year old copper diggings. Your journey involves a bit of rock scrambling and takes you to the north end of the Old Mamainse Harbour where Arts and Adventure now resides. For many years, passenger and fishing boats came to a wharf built on top of the shoal -from the shoreline to Roussain Island. There were many villages (native and frontier), tourist industries, Hudson Bay Post, graveyard, military rescue service and shooting range at the Old Mamainse Harbour. In the distance, you can see the Coppermine Point navigation light which defines Whitefish Bay, Canada side. This is the closest point to the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, and near to where her life boat washed ashore.
