Rockingham House, outside of Boyle, was designed by John Nash in 1809/10. Nash also designed Regents Street and Regents Park in London. The house was the home of the King family, who were granted lands in the area under the Cromwellian settlement. The same lands belonged to the McDermott clan who may have inhabited the lands for the previous 1000 years.
The house was destroyed in a fire that started in the evening of 10th September 1957 and raged on through the night with the last flames dying out some 24 hours later. The Irish state acquired the house and lands sometime after the fire, but the house was left to ruin and eventually demolished in 1971. The plan of the house is still visible in satellite imagery.
