Geocache Description:

Situated above and beyond Blyth Hut in the Tongariro National Park.

Blyth Hut is a short detour on a dead end track off the Round the Mountain Track. For this reason it is not so often visited. The Hut was a previously called Ohakune Mountain Hut, but in 1941 was renamed Blyth Hut in honour or Thomas Arthur (Joe) Blyth who gave so much time and energy developing Tongariro National Park. Joe, a headmaster at Ohakune school, recorded 147 climbs to the summit with friends, family, visitors and school groups. It was said that he taught the 4 R’s: reading, writing, arithmetic and Ruapehu.

Park at the given waypoint and follow the Round the Mountain Track to the junction just east of Waitonga Falls. Continue on the track up to Blyth Hut. The cache is hidden near a great view point on a short marked track past the hut. This cache may not be available if deep snow has fallen to this level.

Feel free to post a picture of Ruapehu from the cache site.

Know before you go – tell someone your plans, check the weather forecast and track conditions. Tongariro National Park weather is extremely changeable all year round. Be prepared for cold, wet windy conditions. Take adequate clothing (warm, water- and wind proof layers), comfortable shoes or boots, something to eat and drink, sunglasses and sunscreen, and a first aid kit.

Happy Hunting!
